Frequently Asked Questions

Eligibility

My dog is a purebred, but it didn’t come with any papers. Its parents weren’t registered. Can I still register it with AKC?
Answer:

There are several options available to you to see if your dog can be registered. First, we encourage you to contact your breeder to determine if it is possible to receive AKC registration papers for your dog.

For a dog with papers from another domestic registry
If you cannot obtain AKC papers, AKC has a new program where we are researching pedigrees of dogs that do not have AKC paperwork to determine if the dog comes from AKC registrable stock.

In order to determine AKC registration eligibility, you will need to send AKC a copy of your dog’s pedigree, registration application and/or registration certificate from another registry. You can also submit documentation provided by the breeder such as a contract or bill of sale. The dog may qualify for registration if the pedigree shows no break in AKC lineage and the dogs in the pedigree originate from AKC registrable stock.

Should the dog be deemed registrable, AKC staff will register the dog in question once the required fee is submitted.

When you submit your paperwork, please include your name and phone number. You can submit the paperwork in one of three ways:

  1. Fax the information to 919-816-4232. Mark it attn: Registry Research.
  2. Email images to altreg@akc.org. Place Registry Research in the subject line
  3. Mail to:
    AKC Registry Research
    Attn:  Special Services

If your dog is spayed or neutered and you’re interested in competing in AKC Companion Events (Obedience, Rally, Agility, Tracking) or Performance Events (Hunt Test, Herding, Lure Coursing, Earthdog etc.) you might want to consider an PAL/ILP number.

PAL/ILP
The Purebred Alternative Listing/Indefinite Listing Privilege (PAL/ILP) is designed to allow dogs that are ineligible for registration, but are distinguishable as a member of an AKC registrable breed, to participate in certain AKC Events.

There are a number of reasons a purebred dog would be ineligible for registration or the owner might choose to apply for a PAL/ILP instead of registering the dog. To list a few of the more common ones:

  1. Dog is from a rescue group or shelter
  2. Owner never received papers from the breeder
  3. Incomplete paper work
  4. Owner does not want to pay late fees
  5. Dog registered with another organization ineligible for AKC registration such as:
    1. America’s Pet Registry (APRI)
    2. Continental Kennel Club (CKC)
    3. Canine Kennel Club (CKC)
    4. United All Breed Registry
    5. United Kennel Club (exceptions for Coonhounds & certain FSS breeds)
    6. North American Purebred Dog Registry

For a complete List of AKC registrable breeds go to the follow web address
http://www.akc.org/breeds/complete_breed_list.cfm

In order to enroll, a dog must be spayed or neutered. A PAL/ILP number is not an alternative form of registration. Some other breeds enrolled in the Foundation Stock Service (FSS) are also eligible for Companion and Performance Events.

Applying for this program is a simple process. Applications for enrollment into the Purebred Alternative Listing/Indefinite Listing Privilege Program can be downloaded from our website. You will need to go to http://www.akc.org/pdfs/masterform.cfm. The application is in pdf format and requires the use of Adobe's Acrobat Reader to view the application. Adobe's Acrobat Reader can be obtained free of charge from www.adobe.com. You must use Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0 or newer to view the files. If you are not able to download the application, you can email PAL@akc.org to request an application be mailed to you. When requesting a form via email, please, include your name and current mailing address.

Once enrolled in the PAL/ILP program, entering AKC events is as easy as with a registered dog. The only difference is that instead of an AKC registration number, you would list the dog's PAL/ILP number on the Entry form.

The benefits for you and your dog are endless, competing in Companion Events & Performance Events is not only fun and rewarding, it has been proven that training strengthens the bond between dog and owner. For more information or questions about the PAL/ILP program contact PAL@akc.org.

My dog is registered with a foreign registry.  Can I register my dog with the AKC?
Answer:

A description of the foreign registration process, along with a listing of acceptable foreign registries, can be found at http://www.akc.org/rules/special_registry_services.cfm.
You will need an AKC Foreign Registration Application (ADIMPT). You can download the foreign registration application from our website. You will need to go to the following address - http://www.akc.org/pdfs/masterform.cfm.
The application is in .pdf format and requires the use of Adobe's Acrobat Reader to view the application. Adobe's Acrobat Reader can be obtained free of charge from www.Adobe.com. You must use Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0 or newer to view the files. If you need an application mailed to you, please e-mail your name and your home mailing address (snail mail).
The dog must be registered with the name that appears on the foreign Registration Certificate/Certified Pedigree. Foreign titles will not appear on any AKC documentation.

The items listed below must be submitted for the AKC to consider registration (this information also is printed on the form):
1. The properly completed application, signed in ink.
2. The $125.00 registration fee, payable in U.S. funds - do not send cash.
3. A clear and legible photocopy of the original Certificate of Registration indicating the dog's registry and owner of record - do not send the original certificate.
4. A clear and legible photocopy of the foreign three-generation Certified Pedigree (or Export Pedigree, where applicable).
If both the sire and dam of the dog identified on the application are AKC registered, print the AKC registration number of the sire and dam in the appropriate spaces on the front of the application. In this case, you may omit the copy of the Certified Pedigree.
5. All foreign dogs being registered with the AKC are required to have positive identification. This section of the application must be completed to show: a) the type of identification (tattoo, microchip, DNA profile), b) the identifying information and its location on the dog, and c) the registry recording the identifying information. The identification may be done after the dog is in the United States, but prior to AKC registration.
6. Two three-by-five-inch color photographs, providing close-up front and side views of the dog in a standing position, are required.

I have a rare breed and I don’t see it on AKC’s list of recognized breeds. Can I still register my dog?

Answer:

You can’t register your dog until its breed receives full AKC recognition, but your dog may be eligible for a listing with the AKC’s Foundation Stock Service (FSS). The FSS provides record keeping services for a number of rare breeds that aren’t currently AKC-registrable. Several FSS breeds are allowed to compete in Agility, Obedience, Tracking, and Rally.

Conditional Registration

What is Conditional Registration?

Answer:
The AKC's DNA programs have resulted in an unprecedented level of accuracy to the AKC registry by evaluating the parentage of many AKC dogs and litters. However, a very small percentage of dogs are found, often years after birth, to have an unknown ancestor. All AKC registered dogs that are descendants of the unknown ancestor will have their registration downgraded to "conditional" until a three generation pedigree of DNA profiled parentage is established. "Unknown" will be noted on the registration or pedigree for the ancestor in question. Once a three generation pedigree is established, all future descendants will be given a standard registration status. Dogs with Conditional Registration may participate in the same AKC events in which PAL/ILP dogs may participate. To register a litter sired or produced by a dog with Conditional Registration, both the sire and dam must be AKC DNA Profiled.

The Conditional Registration program began in June 2007.

Limited Registration

What is limited registration?
Answer: Limited Registration means that the dog is registered but litters produced by that dog are ineligible for registration.  In addition, a limited dog cannot compete in conformation shows. It is eligible, however, to be entered in any other licensed or member event, including Obedience, Tracking, Field Trials, Hunting Tests, Herding, Lure Coursing, Agility, Rally, and Earthdog.

The breeder assigns limited registration to a dog by marking (blackening) out the limited registration box on the application. The limited box should not be marked if the dog is being fully registered. When registering a dog on-line, you will be prompted to enter the three numbers in the limited box to receive full registration. Failure to do so will result in a limited registration.

Limited Registration certificates are white with an orange border; the Full Registration certificate is white with a purple border.

If my breeder applied limited registration to my dog, is there any way I can change it to full registration?

Answer:

Limited Registration can be changed to Full Registration only by the litter owner(s). The litter owner(s) will need to obtain the Application for Removal of Limited Registration of an AKC-Registered Dog (form AXLTDR). That form should be completed and sent to our Raleigh address with a $25.00 processing fee. After processing, we will send a Full Registration certificate to the dog's owner. You can download the application from our website - http://www.akc.org/pdfs/masterform.cfm.

PIN Number

Why does my dog registration application have a PIN number?  What do I do with the PIN number?

Answer:

Only dog registration applications from litters that have a single litter owner will contain a Personal Identification Number (PIN).  The PIN is located on the registration application that the breeder provided to you when you purchased your puppy. The PIN allows you to complete the registration of your dog on-line. In addition to the PIN, you need the following information to complete the on-line dog application:

Puppy Number
Addresses of all owners
Name, gender, color, and markings (if any)
Date of transfer
Registration Package Options
Payment information

Please proceed to:
http://www.akc.org/dogreg/

If you are the new owner of the dog and there is no PIN on the registration application, you must mail in the completed paper dog registration application in order to register your dog. When the process is complete, AKC will mail the registration certificate to the owner.

Supplemental Transfer

I bought/obtained a dog from someone else and the back of the registration application/certificate is already filled out with someone else’s information. How do I register the dog in my name?

Answer:

You will need a Supplemental Transfer Statement. This statement verifies the transfer of the dog from the former owner to you.

This form accompanies the application or registration certificate and is used when a dog has been transferred more than once before applying for registration in the name of the current owner. A supplemental transfer is used every time a dog changes hands. So if a litter owner sold a puppy to John Smith, who then sold the dog to Jane Doe, who then gave the dog to you, the AKC would require the original dog registration application showing the transfer of the dog from the litter owner to John Smith; one supplemental transfer showing the transfer from John Smith to Jane Doe; and one supplemental transfer showing the transfer from Jane Doe to you.

A supplemental transfer can be downloaded here:

http://www.akc.org/pdfs/masterform.cfm.

If you need a supplemental transfer mailed to you, please e-mail your home mailing address.

A dog whose complete and accurate chain of ownership cannot be verified or completed for any reason is not eligible for registration. If the chain of transfer(s) to you cannot be properly completed for any reason, the dog cannot be transferred into your name. The establishment and verification of the chain of title is necessary for us to maintain a complete and accurate Stud Book Register and maintain the integrity of the registry upon which the Stud Book Register is based.

All sections of the supplemental transfer must be filled out in their entirety. The first section contains payment information. The AKC charges $5.00 per supplemental transfer. Payment can be made by check, money order or credit card.

The second section contains the dog’s information. The dog registration number, sex, and breed must exactly match the registration number, sex, and breed on the application or certificate. If you are using a supplemental transfer with a dog registration application and you do not agree with the dog’s name on the application, please draw a line through it and indicate the new name on the final supplemental transfer.

Lost Paperwork

I lost my dog’s registration application, and I am not the breeder. How do I get a duplicate?
Answer:

Note: The only person who can request another copy of the dog's registration application is the litter owner. If you are not the litter owner, you should get in touch with the litter owner and have that individual request another copy.

After we receive the information, we will print another form and mail it to the litter owner. The litter owner can then transfer the paperwork to you.

I lost my dog’s registration certificate. How do I get a duplicate?
Answer:

You can download a Request For A Duplicate Registration Certificate from our website. You will need to go to the following address - http://www.akc.org/pdfs/masterform.cfm.

The request form is in .pdf format and requires the use of Adobe's Acrobat Reader to view the application. Adobe's Acrobat Reader can be obtained free from www.adobe.com. You must use Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0 or newer to view the files.
If you are unable to download these forms, please send your name and mailing address to orderdesk@akc.org and we will mail you a form.

Once you have obtained and completed the form, mail it to the address indicated on it. After we receive your information, we will print a new certificate and mail it to you.

The form will request information about your dog, including its registered name and registration number. If you do not have either piece of information, please contact the AKC at 919-233-9767 so a customer service representative can assist you with looking up that information. We can only release information about a registered dog to its recorded owner. If you are not the recorded owner, you cannot obtain information regarding the dog, nor can you request a duplicate certificate.

I lost my dog’s registration number. How can I find it?

Answer:

If you cannot find the dog’s AKC number, you can request a duplicate registration application here.

Missing Items

I ordered a pedigree and/or a Dog Care and Training Video for my dog at the time of registration.  I received the certificate but not the other products.  Where is the rest of my order?
Answer:

Most pedigrees are processed and mailed with your registration certificate. Pedigrees for newly recognized breeds or dogs that have foreign dogs in their pedigree may require additional research. These pedigrees will be mailed at later date than your registration certificate. If you did not receive your pedigree, contact AKC at info@akc.org with your complete name and address and the dog’s registration number so AKC can check the status of the order.

The video is mailed separately and may take an additional week or two.

I ordered the AKC CAR Lost & Found package when I registered my dog?  When will I receive my collar tag?

Other registration questions

Why has AKC increased fees?
Answer:

The AKC Board of Directors voted unanimously at its October 2011 meeting to restructure the individual dog registration and co-ownership fees. This new fee structure will allow AKC to continue its good works for all dogs, including canine health research donations, search-and-rescue dog grants, lost dog recovery, kennel inspections, monitoring canine legislation, and promoting responsible dog ownership among other programs. AKC can also continue to provide the same level of quality vital services to clubs, exhibitors and breeders. This is the first registration fee increase since 2007 despite the continuing economic challenges facing the country and as a result the sport of purebred dogs.

As of January 1, 2012, the first-time individual dog registration fee and each basic transfer of ownership fee will increase to $30 per dog. This new fee structure also includes modifications to co-ownership. With the first-time individual dog registration as well as any subsequent transfer of dog ownership, one (1) primary owner will be listed with the $30 registration or transfer fee. In addition, a $10 fee will be added for each additional owner listed on the registration certificate.* The primary owner will receive the official AKC Registration Certificate and each additional owner will receive an e-mail only copy of the registration certificate. The e-mail copy will be clearly marked COPY, will not display the certificate issue date, and will not have the transfer form on the back.

Owners of AKC Registered Dogs will still receive the same benefits as before including:

  • AKC Registration Certificate
  • Complimentary Trial Pet Health Care Insurance
  • Eligibility to Participate in AKC Events
  • New Puppy Handbook and Optional discounted Registration Packages

As the nation's only not-for-profit registry, we look forward to the continued support of dog owners through registration with the American Kennel Club. Together we will overcome the current challenges of the economy and continue our good works on behalf of all dogs.

*Co-owners of dams registering litter members to the litter owners will be exempt from this additional fee.

What is the co-owner fee?
Answer:

Effective January 1, 2012, the co-owner fee applies to dog registrations and certificate transfers. A dog may be registered/transfer with one primary owner at no additional cost. For each additional owner, there is a $10 fee per co-owner.

The primary owner will receive the official AKC Registration Certificate and each additional owner will receive an e-mail only copy of the registration certificate. The e-mail copy will be clearly marked COPY, will not display the certificate issue date, and will not have the transfer form on the back.

*Co-owners of dams registering litter members to the litter owners will be exempt from this additional fee.

How do I register my dog with the AKC?
Answer:

The sire and dam of your dog must be AKC registered and the litter, of which your dog is a member, must also have been registered to obtain an individual registration application for your dog.

How can I change incorrect information on my registration certificate?
Answer:

Please email us the dog’s registration number and state what information is incorrect: the spelling of your name, the spelling of the dog’s name, the color of the dog, or the sex of the dog.  If the address is incorrect, please indicate the correct address. Once we have received this information, we will send you a corrected registration certificate as well as a corrected pedigree if necessary. All corrections, unless the mistake was on the part of the AKC, will require a $20 correction fee.

The name of an AKC registered dog may be changed provided the dog was whelped in the United States. Further, in cases where the litter owner(s) first individually registered the dog, the litter owner(s) written consent shall be required. A dog name containing a Registered Kennel Name cannot be changed without the written consent of the owner(s) of that Registered Kennel Name. However, no change in name will be recorded by the American Kennel Club after the dog has produced or sired an AKC registered litter or has received an award at an AKC-licensed or member event. Any name change must comply with all AKC requirements.

You can download a Dog Name Change Authorization application from our Web site. The fee for changing a dog's name is $25.00.

How can I change the address at which I receive information from AKC about my dog?
Answer:

AKC will update our customer records at no charge. If you want a corrected registration certificate, the fee is $20.00.

Please download an Change of Address Form from our website at
http://www.akc.org/pdfs/masterform.cfm.

Or submit in writing your full name, new address, old address, and telephone number to:
The American Kennel Club
PO Box 900057
Raleigh, NC 27675-9057

If you have a registered dog(s) or litter(s) listed using a variation of your name or a nickname, please include this to ensure your address is updated on all your records.

I never received a dog registration application from my breeder. How can I get an application for my dog?
Answer:

Buyers should not accept a promise that this identification or the registration application will be sent later. It is the buyer’s responsibility to obtain complete identification of the dog as described below. If sufficient information to identify the dog within AKC records is not forthcoming, the buyer should seriously consider not purchasing the dog.

This identifying information may be stated on a properly completed AKC registration application, on a bill of sale, or on a written statement, signed by the seller, that gives the dog's full breeding information as follows:
Breed, sex and color
Date of birth of the dog
Registered names and numbers of the dog's sire and dam
Name and address of the breeder
Date of purchase by the buyer
Name and address of the buyer

If you have this information, you should write a letter to AKC and give the details of the situation and copies of any documents you have. Please provide the full names, addresses, and phone numbers of everyone involved, including you. You will need to fax or mail that letter and copies of all related documents to:

American Kennel Club
Customer Registration Support Dept.
PO Box 900066
Raleigh, NC 27675-9066
Fax - 919-816-4250

We will review the situation, contact the breeder, and get back to you.

Please sign your letter of complaint.

Registration with the AKC is strictly voluntary. The AKC cannot force breeders to register their litters with us, and, as there are many domestic dog registries, the term “papers” or “papered” does not necessarily mean “eligible for AKC registration.”

If you have made every available effort to obtain the AKC registration application from the seller (litter owner/ breeder, pet store or third party) and it is still not forthcoming, the AKC can only recommend that you seek legal counsel to determine if you can obtain relief through civil channels. You may also wish to bring this matter to the attention of your local Better Business Bureau or Consumer Protection Service.

The AKC is not directly involved in the commerce of dogs, and the AKC does not license, endorse, register, or recommend any breeders or kennels. Membership in the AKC is comprised of independent dog clubs located throughout the United States. No individual persons are members of the AKC.

I received my dog’s registration certificate, but a roman numeral or my last name has been added to the name I chose for my dog.
Answer:

The AKC reserves the right to assign roman numerals for identification purposes. The AKC permits 37 dogs of each breed to be assigned the same name. In this case the name you chose had already been used for this breed so a Roman numeral was assigned.

When all 37 allotments have been taken, your last name is added.

If you wish to have this name changed, please choose a different unique name for the dog. Please e-mail this information to info@akc.org.

How do I change the name of my dog?
Answer: The name of an AKC registered dog may be changed provided the dog was whelped in the United States.

My name has changed. How do I update the AKC records on my dog(s)?
Answer: To have your name changed in our system, please send AKC the following:
  • A brief statement explaining the name change (Stating your new name & your home mailing address).
  • A copy of a document showing the name change (ex: driver's license or a marriage license).
  • The registered name and number of each dog.
It is not important that you receive a new certificate for each dog reflecting your name change; however, if you do want new certificates for each dog, there is a $20 charge per dog (make check or money order payable to AKC). Please mail the above information to:

American Kennel Club
Attn: Registration Department
8051 Arco Corporate Drive, Suite 100
Raleigh, NC 27617-3390

After we receive the above information, we will update our system. If you requested new certificates, we will then print a new certificate for each dog and mail them to you.

What are the AKC requirements on dog names?

Note: Effective, February 1, 2008, AKC is testing a pilot program that allows for the registered name of a dog to contain up to (50) fifty characters. An additional $10 fee will be incurred when more than (36) thirty-six characters are chosen.

  4. Roman numerals must not be included at the end of the dog's name. The AKC reserves the right to assign roman numerals for identification purposes. The AKC permits thirty-seven (37) dogs of each breed to be assigned the same name.

    d. Breed names alone
  7. An imported dog must be registered with the same name under which it was registered in its country of birth, except for the addition of a registered kennel name.
